Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Revolving Immigration Conversation and the Price to Pay when the Spotlight Fades

April 25th 2010 13:33
In an age of false bravado, pandering and politicians who say this but really mean that there is not a more lost conversation than the one surrounding immigration.

Like the summer dress that is only brought out for “special” occasions or the “good” silver used for certain company this issue only rears it’s head when it is needed to woo votes or as a bag of tricks to change the conversation.

Once again, immigration has emerged at the forefront of discussion leaving the people on the streets of America lost in an haze of panic as Johnny come lately laws are shoveled through Congressional houses to fix a problem that dates back to the founding of the United States of America.

Laws that represent the hopes and dreams of people from foreign lands who still see the United States of America as the land of opportunity where they can improve circumstances for themselves, their children and their children’s children.

It was the idea of an open border that founded this country when immigrants hopped on boats and planes to build traditions of their own in the world’s largest melting pot.

A Melting Pot that offers the hungry tired and weary an opportunity to obtain work and become a part of a growing nation that needed the helping hands of the world to grow into the super power that exists today.

It is reminders from Ellis Island and the Mayflower, the words on the statue of liberty and the fact that most American’s family story begins in a foreign land that makes the issue difficult for anybody to honestly say that one man or woman does not have the right to have the same opportunities of freedom and chance for prosperity that each and every American enjoys.

Even with these reminders of everything that founded the United States of America there also has to be a point where we face reality. The reality surrounding a worldwide battle for resources and the dangers of an unbalanced world waiting outside American borders.

It is the lack of oversight on a growing problem that is forcing the mood of an angry nation to overlook the conversation of finding balance.

Lack of oversight in failed management of existing laws that has allowed bottom lines to replace our duty as Americans to not throw fuel on an out of control fire.

A growing problem that has created a heated issue from both sides of the debate as the state and federal government search for ways to find balance on an issue where there is no middle ground.

It is our reputation as a the land of opportunity that is in a direct clash with the ever increasing openness of a society in caring for the sick at our health care facilities, dealing with businesses who are openly allowed to increase their bottom lines by paying an illegal undocumented worker less money than a tax paying American citizen and honoring the hard work and perseverance of the worker who made the journey, raised a family under the radar but now must have his merit questioned decades later.

As grand of an idea as it would be to finally finish resurrecting the fence of legend across the border or to welcome in the entire world to the mess we already have in this country neither of these easy solutions are going to fix the underlying the problem.

The problem of fixing the holes that are letting water into a sinking boat with a failed economy and a reactionary federal government that continues to prove that they have no grasp on the issue.

The issue that will most likely come at the price of re-election in their home states as one side is guaranteed to be riled over any vote that doesn’t go their way on that issue.

As much as the buzz words “fair”, “balanced” and “just” enter the conversation on hot button issues the end solution is anything but that.

When the dust settles there will either be nothing done or said on the issue until it comes time for national political debate and we can hear more about the fabled fence or a more compassionate America.

Words that will amount to nothing leaving the states and localities to fend for themselves with an iron fist to protect their own citizens…

As seen in Arizona, and the states that will follow suit from their example, this is the future of the immigration debate until we end the all or nothing conversations on the road to nowhere.

The road to nowhere that will result in broken efforts, corporations still being excused from the law, increased racial profiling and further away from the end game of protecting American prosperity.
