Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Obstructed View of Race and Civility in a Radical Society

September 20th 2009 14:13
For a society that has achieved feats of science and wonder that were once thought to only be possible on the pages of a science fiction novel; it is blatantly apparent that simplistic thinking will always be the ruler of the day.

The ruler that allows a celebrity to say radical things so long as it conforms to our own political belief and structure.

The ruler that allows us to frame political arguments based around the tenants of good, evil and patriotic thought.

The ruler that allows us to box our allies and enemies in the political spectrum on the basis of single issues, gender, race and the overall theme that states your either with us or against us.

For all the chatter that came to the forefront of discussion about the loss of civility not one person came from any of these conversations with a better understanding of where the true problem began or where the beast is sleeping now.

The loss of civility did not begin with a Republican attack on the Democratic side of the argument nor did it come from the lack of tact from an entertainer who is on record for saying outlandish things and acts of civil unrest.

The loss of civility in society was created when the powers “that be” decided winning at all costs was more important than ensuring that laws and legislation should be modeled for all Americans instead of the majority.

Majority rule has become accepted and common place in conversation as each side has the dream of manifest destiny to win over the liberals or conservatives with the singular ideal of stopping them from tearing this country apart.

When we approach the historical conversation and do a side by side analysis to the arguments of today, the result is always the same.

For every man or woman’s simplistic dream of achieving absolute power there is always a backlash that creates strife and animosity in a society created on utopian ideals.

The backlash in today’s modern age of convenience stems from a reflection of our past where groups were oppressed and fought for the rights that were guaranteed for every American man, woman child.

Rights that were later clarified in amendments to ensure these inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were attainable for all Americans.

For every achievement attained by way of rectifying the problems of the past there will always be shadowy figures and inconsistencies that will stand as invisible walls to keep us divided as a nation.

Inconsistencies that will stand in the corner of the room for every opportunity to achieve historical milestones and break glass ceilings; leaving us to question whether our decison was solely based on being a part of history.

Like an itch that turns into a puss filled rash the haze of everything we said Election “08” stood for by way of showing the world everything that was clearly possible and turning it into reality has come back to haunt us.

The ghosts of our nations past has turned into an albatross around the neck of conversation as an argument that was meant to be simple in form has transformed into the same racial frenzy that sparked bitterness and anger in the days, weeks and months before Barack Obama was elected President of The United States of America.

America may have reached a state of “Post Race” by electing the first president of African decent but the problems that exist behind every radical notion in an extreme conversation is and will always be there.

The things we need to understand are not being talked about and the only people who are left to suffer are the citizens of the United States of America.

Instead of trying to understand why opposition stands in front of simple ideals concerning helping our fellow man, ensuring all Americans have equal rights to marriage, finding a bridge between extremes in the abortion issue and protecting our inalienable rights in the Constitution a two step dance has been created to sway the American people in a power play of fear, race and guilt.

Fear that the steps taken to ensure equal rights for all Americans are being trampled on by people from places we are unfamiliar with or don’t understand.

Fear of a political conspiracy to take away everything that the men and women of our armed forces have fought and died for; by way of our personal freedom to live our lives as we see fit with the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Through this fear we embolden shocking behavior while admonishing the other side for the doing the exact same thing.

Through this game of touch and go a system of hero worship is created as we encourage celebrities and public figures to openly say things like, a sitting President “Doesn’t like black people” or “I hope the President Fails” while swinging the hammer of race in a power parade at a Congressman who has a moment of incivility during a sitting President’s speech.

As we embolden these cariactures for their bad behavior it only strengthens the argument as they spread like a virus until reaching the point where society says they have gone too far for doing the things we have encouraged them to do.

Incivility is incivility without circumstances, excuses or parades whenever it suits us.

The problem exists in our daily lives through radical discussions where rumor and innuendo is replaced for facts and trying to understand the true root of problems.

If there is a sincere desire for our society to find that point of civility it has to begin inside each and every one of us.

In our homes, schools, places of work, places of worship, dinner tables, social networks and ultimately in our individual hearts and minds.

These are the places where we build up the cult heroes that rally us into frenzies on a road to nowhere.

The road where the original point of disagreement was forgotten and the only thing we are left with is the red anger for the other side and the empty feeling of misunderstanding after the hollow victory is achieved.
