Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Original Simplicity of the Conversation and the Building Anger of a Confused Nation

March 28th 2010 14:17
There is something to be said about a week that has brought so much joy, anger and fear to a nation in turmoil.

A nation experiencing historical levels of unemployment, an economic crisis even the most optimistic spin doctor can’t twist into a tale of success or failure and a populous of people that aren’t getting the full conversation.

The full conversation about the merits of a bill that will improve some aspects of a broken health care system while also causing burden on an already sputtering economy.

Burden on a sky rocketing deficit built on trillions of dollars of debt that will now grow and grow to astronomical levels with the burdens of funding a nationalized Health Care system.

The questions we should be asking aren’t being met with straight answers.

Straight answers about the timing of this landmark legislation in an age where unemployment is teetering at 10% and the polarization of the electorate is preventing our national leaders from compromising on something as simple as extending jobless benefits.

Is it really more important to settle old scores, meet campaign goals and wag the finger in the face of opposition than it is to remember the simplicity behind these articles of legislation?

The simplicity of making the public more aware of what they’re putting into their bodies, providing consumers with useful information and ensuring that every child receives equal opportunities in life through health, education and growing up in a safe environment.

When it comes to the issues surrounding Universal Health Care while still protecting the fundamental rights of citizens to live lives free from government intrusion; these are things we should be squarely focused on...

It’s the little things that tug on our heart strings that spark grand ideas.

Grand ideas that are warped into political power plays of mandates and counter reactions of overhauling the system with the eventual push of social laws into the main stream.

It’s the idea of revolution through government process that makes the American System of Government stand out from others.

An idea that gives ordinary citizens the belief that they can take to the streets to have their voices heard whenever they feel government is doing something against the will of the people.

A simple belief that should have been met with reaction from government has been deduced to a change of conversation thanks to the radicals who have spent a lifetime driving everything to extremes.

Extremes that continue to instill fear in each and every citizen that the beliefs of the opposition are fueled by racism, fundamentalism or ignorance.

It is for this reason that we close our ears to the issues brought up by the voice of dissent as the language on both sides of the aisle become more and more confusing and we are left to only see red or blue and choose a side.

With the passage of Health Care Reform there are no winners of losers...

The only reward the American people are going to receive on the matter is much like the Election of 2000 where the original reasons for the result are forgotten and furor becomes the ruler of the day.

Furor that will not be looking to discuss how an impoverished child will now be able to receive life saving asthma medication, why our health care system will be degraded to new levels or why Johnny is now filing for bankruptcy thanks to higher taxes.

The Furor that will be in play will come from radical elements of society as the ugly things witnessed in this week of celebration for the Democratic Party and anger for the Republican Party escalate higher and higher as the American people will continue to feel as if they have become outside figures in a political process gone wrong.

Outside figures in a game that affects each and every one of their lives with the people in power only working towards the interests of gaining and maintaining power as opposed to working towards the original simplicity of the conversation.

The simplicity of the conversation that could return if we open our eyes, ears and minds to the things that are happening on Capitol Hill as opposed to waiting till November to elect a new crop of the same people who will only continue the endless cycle of pain for the American people.
