The Politics In The Creation of Enemies During A Financial Crisis

“If we mean seriously to unite the nation within itself, we must convince them that their complaints are regarded, that their injuries shall be redressed. On that foundation I would take the lead in recommending peace and harmony to the people. On any other, I would never wish to see them united again. If the breach in the Constitution be effectually repaired, the people will of themselves return to a state of tranquility; if not, may discord prevail forever.”
~William Pitt Sr.
(1st Earl of Chatham, British Prime Minister, Secretary of State, Lord Privy Seal & leader of the House of Commons)
When looking back at the history of world political analysis, the one thing that unites every politician, great leader, revolutionary, militant and dictator is having an enemy. The identification of an enemy in world history is usually centered on some great injustice or strife.
Themes of the oppressed or mistreated rising up against a higher social class or order that didn’t listen to the needs of the people; or rebellion against a great group that suppressed the rights of religion, human rights or the basic tenants of life liberty and pursuit of happiness.
The blue print of American succession of power avoided these pit falls by putting the tools of power directly in the hands of the people. Bumps in the road prevented all people from gaining these unalienable rights but over time and through a maturation process every American now has a piece of the decisions our Federal and State Government make on our behalf.
For this reason succession of power in the United States has always been a peaceful process and government can continue functioning through transition of power.
This statement sounds simple in theory but politics will never work in its basic form or function without the creation of enemies to promote cause for the people to be involved.
In American politics the creation of enemies simply boils down to a fire sale wrapped in left and right wing conspiracies based on fear of the unknown.
False fears and hope in the Executive Powers of the President to sweeping in to set back or make immediate change on decade’s of legislation created to maintain balance in our society.
False fears in gaining or losing the prosperity and safety of our great nation because of regime change.
False fears of the loss of freedoms to live our personal lives the way the founders of this great nation intended, as free from the tyranny of government intrusion into our personal lives.
Theories of the vast Left or Right Wing Conspiracy don’t really bother me when they come from talk show hosts who are paid for their outrageous behavior or comments.
The part that bothers me is when this speech that is understood by the vast amount of the American people to be outside of the norm of serious politics is made an agenda issue by the people we elect to serve us on a national level. For our President to give political credence to an entertainer the likes of Rush Limbaugh he is doing nothing more than directing traffic to his radio show and putting millions more in his pocket.
While the onus of the debate should be on how we can all come together to help our fellow man through this world financial crisis our “powers that be” in the Democratic party would rather steer the conversation to the people who represent the worst things we carry within ourselves as Americans. It is the job of shock jocks to say outlandish things to get people talking and they do this very well. The Freedom of Speech protects their right to do this but creating an enemy of these national characters gives them more power than they should ever have.
Rush Limbaugh will never put his name on any bill to help disabled Americans, fix our financial crisis, produce a cure for Cancer or promote our nations safety nor will he ever be the deciding factor in compromise simply because he has no role in our political process nor should he ever.
We rely on elected officials to debate and discuss these things because it promotes the conversation and leads to solutions. If President Obama is looking for someone to debate on the merits of what’s good for America he should turn to the Congressional Republican leadership as they are the direct representatives elected for and by the people.
What we have is the same creation of an enemy laid out by Democratic political czars that said enough was enough for the 20 year Bush/Clinton political dynasty which was later formulated into a mandate on the eight years of the George W Bush Presidency bypassing the other man on the ballot who happened to be John McCain.
The Democratic Party has now turned battles against statesman, stalwarts of party prosperity and mavericks into a partisan gridlock against people who have no power in our federal government.
Partisan elections, mandates and absolute power have carried us to this crucial point where politics is no longer about finding solutions but rather about who can make the other side look more out of touch with America to gain political points.
No amount of scary billboards with Rush Limbaugh’s face on it will conceal the fact that are country is going to go broke if we continue the bleeding process. Doing the whole hear no evil, see no evil thing by scolding the voice of opposition for not “putting on a great show” in laying out the simple truths of dangers to come is also not helping the American people promote the conversation as well.
When it all hits the breaking point these are the things we will look back on in judgment of these crucial times.
The pettiness and strife is getting us nowhere as a nation and there has to be some point for us as “the people” to call on our leaders to fix their mess’s on Capitol Hill and beyond.
President Obama was right when he said, “The Politics of Yesterday Isn’t Working” but there is a very distinct line between saying it to get the job and actually directing this when you’re the most powerful man in the free world who has the power to dictate the conversation.
