Election 10 and the Right to Vote
October 31st 2010 12:16
Of all the rights guaranteed to American Citizens none is more important than the right to vote.
A right that was fought for by men and women of every race and national origin who were willing to lay their lives on the line to have a say on the actions of their federal, state and local government bodies who serve to represent the will of the people.
While the issue of serving the people may get muddied whenever the person or party we individually voted for does not win his or her term or office; the system still stands for that direct connection between the people and public servants who take an oath to serve their city, county, state or country in the interests of the men and women living in their constituencies.
For 234 years the American system of voting has stood tall in the face of every road block that has been thrown its way.
In the year 2010, battles are still being waged to ensure that the full voices of the American people are represented across the globe.
For this fight, men and women are being tossed around like pawns in what has become a partisan issue that shields the American public from the one truth.
The truth that should go beyond any last ditch effort by political parties to secure extra votes or back handed scheme to tilt the scales one way or the other.
Every citizen deserves to have their voice heard and should take advantage of the rights forsaken to some by not being given the opportunity to vote because of the color of their skin, gender, sexual orientation or social standing.
In an age where we are faced with bad choices on the ballot that force us to play ennie meenie, minie mo at times it is still important for us to remain in the system and not let our fundamental rights go to waste.
There is no truth to the myth about a “wasted” vote because every vote is a part of the overall process that binds the contract between American citizens and the government that is representative of the American people and the United States Constitution.
When it comes time to make a decision on whether or not to vote your decision should have nothing to do with a pledge to vote Republican or Democrat and should not be influenced by the idea of a Tea Party Take Over.
What your decision should be influenced by is an obligation to every American citizen who was denied the right to vote and gave every last drop of their blood, sweat and tears for every citizen to have the opportunity that stands before us on Tuesday.
