Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The True Price of Freedom

February 13th 2011 12:45
For every revolution, uprising and movement from the people against oppressive regimes; citizens of nations that participate in the practice of democracy must begin to measure the true price of freedom.

A price that is paid on the battlefield to maintain protection and order from enemies both foreign and domestic but is also paid by the men and women elected to serve the people of their respective nation.

Service that begins with an oath to represent the interests of their constituents no matter their individual political ideals, religious preference, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or socio-economic status.

The tools of the modern electronic age have been steadily growing and expanding over the past decade as the stewards of intolerance have been losing their grip on the stranglehold of information that is now able to reach men, women and children thirsty for knowledge.

Knowledge that is no longer restricted to television and radio broadcasts, books, newspapers and magazine articles that but are now a part of the revolution that travels to computer screens, cell phones and electronic devices that can fit in the palm of our hands.

If the world learned anything from the uprisings in Iran, Syria and Egypt it would have nothing to do with a war involving religion or the international policies of the political regime’s fighting to maintain power.

What the world learned is translatable into every language and emotion felt by the citizens of nations that follow the principles of Democracy and Freedom across the globe.

This emotion comes from the cry for true freedom from the masses in an effort to have their voices heard over outside influences, greed from within, corporate interests and those who wish to maintain absolute power at all costs.

While condemnation of leadership in nations that have experienced riots and uprisings is easy to pin point because of religious oppression, media exclusion, suppression of information, voting irregularities and lack of democracy from the very top; it is more difficult task for citizens and leadership of nations that practice democracy to examine their own nations from within.

Within the practice of political parties, campaign finance reform, religious intolerance and the idea of majority rule that always leaves the losing minority and all those caught in between left in the cold.

When we jump off of our high horses and pointed fingers towards those who stood in allegiance with nations willing to cut off the internet, to keep the eyes of the universe away from the human rights violations, for the sake of maintaining power what we will find is the presence of imperfect systems of government across the globe.

Imperfect systems that are left flawed for the ability to evolve with the will of the people.

For every time the citizens of a nation feel their voice isn’t being heard by the “powers that be” it is their absolute right to get their attention.

In nations where these rights translate into a contract between the government and its people; disagreements can be handled in what appears to be a civil manner but in other nations where these rights have not been granted the people have to do what they must to take these rights.

When these rights are taken the end result will not always be the storybook romance that has been told in glamorous ways in our history books but will be a series of growing pains that include regimes changing the ways they manipulate media powers, counter revolutions, military force and puppet elections.

For the people of the world who wish to see an end to the vicious cycle; change must begin at home where freedom is taken away on a daily basis because we have lost sight of the bigger picture.

The bigger picture that is framed in the religion we choose to or not to worship, race, nationalities, gender, sexual orientations and the political party we choose to or not to support that distracts us with hot button issues that have nothing to do with the things we are losing and have already lost.

To respect the freedom fighters that fought and died for our rights to be part of the political process that has shaped the world as we know it today we must find a way to get back in the game and bring power back to the people.

If citizens of the world are unwilling to do this the only solution left on the table is to continue propping up our lawn chairs in the sight of beautiful stories of revolutions in far away lands that are destined to be replaced by clones with different agendas but the same end game.
