Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Price to Pay for the War’s we Wage

September 5th 2010 13:27
In the history of mankind there is no uglier word than “War.”

A word that evokes visions of destruction and loss to all those that hear it’s call but is thrown around without any mind when it comes placing it on the things we fear.

Fear of a loss of control or an unknown entity is what brought about the waged wars on terror, drugs and the un-named war against ourselves.

Our society has been built upon a series of physical and invisible war’s as groups from across the globe clashed against one another to give us an end game that is the melting pot of cultures in the United States of America and an undefined line in between one another.

A line that separates Americans into categories of religion, race, gender, age, demographics, sexual orientation and socio-economic class with fighters from each of these groups working to progress one over the other in the name of equality.

The equality that was fought for by Susan B. Anthony, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other warriors of their time is not the same equality that is being fought for today.

What we’ve done is muddied up the waters of a fight that was black and white with the injection of political causes into the mix.

Political causes that have framed the conversation of Gun Rights, Abortion Rights, Religious Rights, Women’s Rights, Gay Rights and Civil Rights into a strictly Democratic or Republican issue rather than a humanitarian or constitutional issue.

If there is anyone in the conversation who asks why we have not reached summit where the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been achieved there would be a loss for an answer.

While one side of the conversation is eager to point to the other in an effort to lay blame on the cause of the problem it is important for us to understand that it is our division and social war’s of our own choosing that is causing the divide.

The divide that causes us to mentally separate fellow citizens of the United States of America into social boxes to help us better understand ourselves.

The divide that causes us to hide in our own shells instead of reaching out to understand the things that are happening in other parts of the United States of America and the World.

The divide that instills the belief that one culture is better than another.

The divide that allows us to believe in the idea of the melting pot but not in the belief that it applies to our own personal lives.

America is divided because we have lost touch with ourselves as a nation and the causes that are bigger than any political party. Causes that will affect every man women and child when there is nowhere to turn for safe drinking water, food and clean air to breathe.

While it may have made the political process more expedient to have only two major political parties it is the American people who are paying the price for a lack of “real choices” to fix the mess we’re in.

For every war there are casualties…

The casualties in the War on Drugs are the addicts who are thrown in jail cells instead of receiving treatment along with the drug king pins in the United States and foreign countries who are allowed to profit from the destruction they are causing across the globe.

The casualty in the War on Terror is our basic understanding of what religion means in the spread of peace and love as opposed to the misguided vision of men driven to do hateful acts upon the guidance of false prophets.

The casualties in the war between ourselves is our country, way of life and the future of a once prosperous nation.

Until we find a way to understand one another for our differences there will be no progress in fixing the economy or saving the Earth from our own destructive nature.

There has never been a war that hasn’t resulted in long term damage to both combatants.

Invisible or physical the result is still the same.

It is up to the American people to decide whether the war’s we wage against one another are worth the damage or if we have already seen enough destruction in the 234 years of our nation’s history.
