Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

From Left Field: The Search for Closure

July 6th 2011 10:53
A day after the most emotional trial in the history of the United States of America to be tried in the arena of public opinion; people around the world are now forced to face the harsh realities a public spectacle helped them escape from.

Its public spectacles like the Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson trials that tug at the heart strings of the world public because of the reminders that they bring. Reminders of the world not being a perfect place to bring justice to the men, women and children that become victims and never find peace in our minds because of a lack of closure.

While I could spend this week’s conversation talking about the finer points of the modern American Justice System and whether or not I feel better about my chances of being proven innocent if I was ever charged falsely or the pain I would feel if a man or woman harmed someone I loved and was wrongly acquitted; I felt it was more important to discuss the issue that is more likely to affect the lives of the majority of Americans and people around the globe.

The issue of countries around the globe being forced to take responsibility for a crisis that knows no borders, has no remorse for natural disasters, children who have no food in their bellies or the family that must go on living after the bread winner no longer has a source of income.

The name of this crisis is debt…

The term that was once reserved for conversations about individual responsibility is now the cause of unrest on every continent around the globe, food shortages and a full scale panic in state legislatures and two houses of the United States Government.

A panic that is the cause of mass layoffs within economic teams that once displayed arrogance towards the voices that stated that this crisis was bigger than they were projecting…

What was once a situation that could be used as referendum against an administration or political party has now become a situation that requires the attention of each and every world citizen.

The time has come for government officials to make the tough decisions that come with balancing budgets instead of playing games with “funny math”.

While the need to cut spending and raise revenue is understood by everyone in the conversation the problems with doing this begins and ends with deciding which government spending programs should stay and which government spending programs should go.

While the need for legislators to drop their bravado in cutting the massive amounts of spending in the health care legislation, killing the Bush Era Tax cuts and ending tax breaks for Oil Companies and Corporations all top the list of obvious answers to fixing a multi decade problem it will take a lot more than that to reach a real conclusion.

When it comes down to it, the sacrifice’s that are mentioned by politicians in the framework of class warfare, ending social programs and cutting defense spending always end up filtering back down to the average citizen in the long run.

It is pure arrogance for anyone to believe that the compromised decisions being made on Capitol Hill will not result in higher taxes, even more watered down government agencies to prevent the next food crisis, oil spill, nuclear disaster or another source of manmade destruction.

When it comes to adding our opinions to the conversation we must begin to look past the names that slap us in the face and the simple “Do Something” catch phrases.

The laziness of modern society will be our downfall because it is this laziness that is giving our representatives the false belief that they are acting in our interests by using short sighted logic.

Deciding to short change the health and welfare of the world public in the false notion that doing “less than enough” is the answer to balancing the budget will only create more problems in the long run.

Problems that will drive us closer to the edge that is already dangerously close.
