Election Season: The Time Honored Fairy Tale of Unity and Rekindling of The Apathetic Spirit
October 18th 2009 12:41
The time has come for Americans to make tough decisions…
Decisions on the local, state and national level to decide the future direction of the United States of America.
The same time honored tradition that men and women have fought and died for in nation states across the world is a right each and every American is entitled to for simply being a citizen of the United States of America.
The knowledge of these rights is a principal that is understood by each and every American and should be something that emboldens the masses into taking charge of their role as gatekeepers of all levels of government.
Gate keepers that can decide the direction of the most powerful nation in the free world…
When it comes to discussions of apathy and why half of America doesn’t take part in the process of choosing our national representatives the issue does not revolve around knowledge and understanding but lies squarely on the de-evolution of the electoral process.
A process designed to choose the best man or woman for the job has morphed into a celebutant pageant of extremes to play on our worst fears.
Fears of the unknown that are woven into tall tales by spin doctors who inject us with a vision of everything the world could be if their represented politician is not elected into office.
What we are left with is politicians who approach us with conversations of understanding why we are angry about the destruction of the process, detailed plans of how they are going to fix it and the ultimate fall into the same trap they fought against when a pollster tells them they need to raise confidence in a certain demographic or socio economic group.
Elections once designed to discuss the issue of how we can build a stronger nation are now simply about turning red states into blue states, shifting segments of a demographic maps into bigger red and blue blobs and a fight to lump racial, gender and religious groups into electoral blocks for one side or the other.
The problem with this de-evolution is within the fact that politicians no longer have to appeal to the individual voter.
The rational thinking average Joe or Jane who doesn’t view the political process in a haze of blue or red and has no preconceived notions of what a Democrat, Republican, a person of a certain race or gender should be.
Politicians are finding it far too easy to simply align themselves with a political party and use that blue or red cloud to appeal to the lowest common denominator in a power play of God, Guns, Gender and Abortion.
Both sides are guilty of this behavior on an even plane with a strong encouragement from the powers that be in the media through the weaving of the story.
The story of twisting words of partisanship into acceptable terms that has our children believing political figures are above being challenged for their ideas.
Instead of having open conversation about the exchange of ideas, stories of societal anger are twisted into assumed notions of racial intolerance, radical anger and road blocks to change.
No matter which party sets the agenda in the halls of Congress and the Oval Office the story will remain the same and the voter caught in the middle of the double-speak firestorm will become more and more apathetic.
Apathetic because of the lack of change on the part of our national politicians to try and elevate the playing field from agendas of power acquisitions to actions of working for the betterment of the American people.
No matter how deep the national tragedy or crisis the end game will always be the same in the national war for political points. The lust for power and the influence of special interests will always trump the need for common sense decisions on Capitol Hill.
The issues of helping the tired and weary unemployed Americans who have lost their livelihoods, homes and way of life are being shoved under the rug in favor of party political agendas to build clout for the next presidential and congressional campaigns.
What we have a is a sad state of affairs that go well beyond the political regimes of Obama or Bush.
The problems are deep rooted and require a radical approach this country isn’t ready for…
A radical approach in the way we open up our minds, eyes and ears during election season as opposed to jumping on the band wagon of every internet rumor, innuendo or media driven gotcha campaign.
A radical approach in the way we have conversations on important issues that affect all Americans as opposed to framing them in boxes of red or blue while we base our feelings on the issue around who brought it into conversation.
A radical approach in the way we decide who we vote for in terms of deciding who the best man or woman for the job is instead of putting mandates on a political party or individual who is currently in the seat of power.
Everybody in the conversation understands the game and we know all the tricks.
With this knowledge we still line up behind our respective candidates or politcal party with pitch forks held high as we feed the system.
The system of intolerance that can take a great man or woman with a healthy record of service and bi-partisanship and twist their image into an intolerant polarizing figure…
When it comes down to the bare facts it is the people who decide how the game is played and who the players are.
If Election “08” brought any relevant truths to the surface, the strongest of all these would have to be the deep down anger that exists inside the American people for the system failing us.
A politcaly driven election of hope and change did not and can never fix these things and neither will any future election from any other politcal party.
Change has to come from the people when we decide to hold our politicians to a higher standard without the spin doctors claiming this spirit was behind one politician or another.
Until we do this on an individual level there should not be anyone in the conversation who has a right to complain about the toxic environment on the federal and local level and why nothing is getting done in this age of intolerance...
