Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Falling Down the Slippery Slope

June 20th 2010 12:42
In a week that was meant to instill hope in the American people to everything that is wrong but is now being turned toward the side of right…

I like the rest of the American public am left with nothing but disdain, anger, confusion and sense of loss in trying to figure out what happened to the fundamentals.

The fundamentals of a society who stood up against a tyrannical King in search of freedom to practice business, freedom to practice religion, freedom to live in a society that rejected a cast system and freedom to live in a society that ensured every citizen born in the United States of America has the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

With this framework for a utopian society, the powers that be have chosen to create a system bent on destroying the fabric that wove the quilt.

Fabric that helped a nation persevere through systems of slavery, racism, chauvinism and religious intolerance when the world around us tried to tell the United States of America that these things were the norm.

At times, the United States of America has served as a trailblazer for nations in chaos and at other times the United States of America has served as an example of everything that is wrong with the world.

In today’s conversation I am sad to say that our society is spinning towards the latter…

With the inability for any of our leaders to take responsibility for their actions and the inability for the public to stand up and demand acknowledgement of their transgressions, outside of political power plays, we are headed on the road to nowhere as a society.

A road where we choose to lay blame on the companies who have been engrained to do nothing but chase after the almighty dollar and ignore the basics because of a failed political relationship where government regulators would rather honor political contributions than to enforce the laws that are on the books.

A road where we twist simple conversations of government officials doing their jobs to enforce the existing immigration laws into racial wars instead of coming to the table of understanding and bridging the gap between doing nothing and fixing a growing problem that is costing the lives of Americans and causing a strain on already over burdened system.

A road where our individual liberties as citizens of the United States of America are openly infringed on in Congress with the incessant Bi-Partisan agenda of trying to regulate the things that are broadcasted, printed and posted on the internet and other media entities.

Throughout the history of the American story there has been a slow process in place to widdle away at the broad spectrum of rights our forefathers left for future generations to sort out.

In the case of the iron clad laws against child molesters, the infringement of our personal rights is just and needed to protect the most innocent victims.

In the case of protecting the American people from the threat of terrorism we run into a shade of gray.

A shade of gray where Law Enforcement has treaded the line in the name of protection to infringe on the most basic rights of the American public.

What has happened with the cracking of this door is the beginning of a slippery slope.

A slippery slope where movements are in place to change the structure of the Constitution through amendments that would eliminate the most basic words of our forefathers in terms of deciding who is a citizen of the United of America.

A slippery slope where our rights to protect our homes, our rights to certain individual liberties in daily life, our rights to find out what's happening in the world and our fundamental right to have a hand in the actions of our government by having choice in the voting booth are being taken or have already been taken away.

Our forefathers were well aware of the dangers that come with the slippery slope as they used their knowledge from the rise and fall of great civilizations across the world to create the structure for the government of the United States of America.

A structure that is in danger of crumbling because of our divisions and a lack of ability to come to the table of understanding on the most basic issues…

When it comes to understanding and fixing the problem it’s about something more than simply pointing the finger, defining the roles of government and business or saying that things are destroyed beyond repair.

When it comes to understanding and fixing the problem it comes down to the American people and citizens across the globe admitting that there is fault within the all sides of the argument and our divisions are keeping us blind.

Blind to the severity of the problems that exist in the world today and the simplicity of what it will take to fix it.

A philosopher once offered this question…

If a tree fell in the woods and no one was around to hear it; would it make a sound?

Our society is the tree and like the monkeys of legend who have their hands over their eyes, hands over their mouths and hands over their ears; society has turned its back on the things that are happening but has chosen to stand in reaction to the end results.

The end results that have given us a growing catastrophe in the gulf, multiple wars that have no objective, a world wide economic crisis created by greed and political favors, joblessness across the globe and a misguided sense of anger among the populous.

It’s our fears that have allowed this to happen.

Fear of losing our rights that are slowly being taken away due to a society of extremes.

Extremes we are addicted to from an upbringing that taught us to fight fire with fire.

If I learned anything from childhood it was the fact that if two groups are throwing fire at each other’s homes they are both going to end up living in burned down houses.

The time to put down the fireballs is now but it is running out.
