The Lawsuit Generation
July 11th 2010 13:01
There was a time in the not so distant past when disagreements were met with conversation as opposed to a rush to the courtroom.
In this modern age of dramatics and rushing to judgment; notions like this are reserved for the pages of fairy tales and fantasy.
What has happened is an evolution…
An evolution in thinking that has stopped us from moving forward on major issues.
Major issues like Immigration Reform, that need immediate attention but have been stifled by years of gridlock, accusations of racism and misguided movements that have prevented our legislators from openly asking the question.
The question of coming face to face with the consequences of laws that are openly mocked and ignored to the benefit of the few as opposed to looking at the big picture of the damage that is being done to American Citizens.
American Citizens, who have opened up their hearts and minds to the idea of a nationalized health care system but must now face the future realities of a run down system that uses the money and resources from the pockets of tax paying Americans to help those who have not paid the price for citizenship.
American Citizens, who must look at the damage that is being caused by drug runners who openly smuggle human beings like cattle across the border in a system of depravity, rape and senselessness because there are corporations who are being allowed to continuously employ these individuals without any realistic worry of government penalty.
There is no arguing the fact that the system is broken on many different fronts.
Immigrants who are considered illegal are treated differently depending on the continent, nation or ocean they arrived to United States of America from.
Race is and will always be a factor when dealing with a problem that goes deeper than any one man or woman who is seeking an opportunity to escape a life of poverty, political turmoil or sub standard quality of life.
If anyone sat here and said that these human beings didn’t have the same rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as each and every American is guaranteed in the Constitution they would be sadly misguided in their thinking.
What we have today is not a question of what anyone deserves or whether or not we should exclude anyone from this right.
The conversation we’re having today is squarely about a lack of resources and a system that was put together by elected officials to prevent the catastrophe that is occurring today along the Mexico/United States border.
A catastrophe that is the fault of the Federal Government for not enforcing the laws that are in play through a catch and release system that escapes that logic of every other nation across the globe.
Logic that goes back to simple math in accounting for the massive number of American Citizens who are in need of assistance during a time of economic turmoil and the Federal Governments efforts to keep the door ajar and not do anything about the illegal immigrants who have already crossed.
While the Arizona Immigration Law may not be a perfect model for the things that need to be done to fix the overall issue it should have at least lit the fire for Congress to begin Immigration Reform.
Much like the partisan Bailouts that put money back in the pockets of the Banks and Auto Industry, Health Care Reform that was rushed to the desk of the President in party line vote and the next round of Financial Reform Bills it is all continuously missing the point.
The point that George W. Bush missed when he rushed a nation to war in a I’m right and you’re wrong strategy and the point that President Barack Obama is missing by shoving a lawsuit to the Supreme Court as opposed to reading over the points of contention and ironing out the obvious problems that will come when Pandora’s Box is opened by giving law enforcement absolute power.
Absolute power at any level of government is the problem and the ball rolls down both sides of the hill just as fast.
Absolute Power isn’t always about a show of force but may also come in the form of doing nothing when something desperately needs to be done.
Done in the form of something as simple as doing your job when American Citizens are being killed and living in fear…
It has been said that when time gets tough Americans always come together for the ultimate greater good.
While I still want to believe in everything the United States of America stands for the only thing I’m seeing is a great fog that doesn’t allow the populous to see inches in front of their faces.
The fog is dense with many layers that are hiding the simplicity of the conversation.
As long as we continue to be unwilling to see beyond it in support of a system that refuses to see the big picture we will remain lost in it.
