What’s in a Word?
April 10th 2011 13:49
To understand the story of the human race we must first go back to year, day, hour and exact minute when a man or woman uttered the first word ever spoken.
A word that would lead to many others in the forming of languages, groups, religions, cultures, sub-cultures and eventually nations that would draw the line in the sand to define who we are as individuals.
It’s the simplicity of a word that has provoked conflict on every corner of the globe and has also brought together life long bonds in the spirit of love.
While each and every person on the planet thinks they understand the power of a single word; it has still not prevented the disastrous consequences of reading words on a piece of paper or hearing them spoken and preventing the same mistakes from happening over and over again.
Mistakes in the generalization of an effect and thinking that we can prevent the cause by adding more laws, regulations, cruelty towards men and women branded as our enemies and hostile actions to give an appearance of moving towards an agenda.
It is the word war that provokes a gut wrenching reaction from anybody who hears it’s call but it is also the word war that creates an immediate understanding in how serious a man, woman or nation is in fixing what they feel is a wrong.
A wrong in the sense of a dictators strangle hold on the people of their nation, rooting out the effects of drugs on communities across the globe, eradicating the devastation drunk driving has caused on families, friends and neighbors and figuring out a way to deal with political, religious, gender and racial differences in a country that is supposed to be a melting pot for all members of the human race.
In our short time on this earth the human race has created many wars for ourselves.
Whether it is nation to nation conflict, the quiet but aggressive wars that were never given the glory of having battles named on continents across the globe or the war between ourselves to scourge the problems we have with each other or with societal ills; it has all lead to one big ball of explosive consequences.
Explosive consequences in the labeling of situations in one word responses instead of digging into the elements of an issue and coming up with the cause, alternatives and multi layered solutions beneficial for all members of society.
From the United States of America’s pre 9/11 foreign policy agenda of dropping bombs to send a message, arming rebels of impoverished countries in the toppling of super power nations and ignoring the rise of dictatorships across the globe…
The American people received the consequences of nations being rebuilt by rogue leaderships and dictators, the rise of terror cells that took root in communities angry at a “savior” who gave them freedom but would not help rebuild schools, aid in getting water to run again and partake in humanitarian concerns along with the instability of an oil rich region that is now in the midst of an explosion being felt across the globe.
When the consequences of war are sheltered from media coverage and the eyes of a nation concerned with domestic squabbles in their government houses it becomes harder and harder for the people to see the effects of bad decisions.
Bad decisions that aided in the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism that came back to American shores on September 11, 2011.
Along with international concerns from short thinking are also the concerns that have built up on the domestic front for the past 50 years.
Concerns from the failed war on drugs that has decimated communities, changed the image of police and federal officers from the heroes of justice into elements of the corrupted system that has evolved from a war that has no agenda.
No agenda in having an end game while drug lords run wild along the borders of the United States of America and gangs gain strength in communities that are lacking rehabilitative services, educational alternatives for youth and community structure to combat the assault on their way of life.
For all the dollars that are wasted to put “Drugs on the Table” in a showing of proof that work is being done there has still not been a sustainable offensive to rebuild communities, put a focus on rooting out the power players from the top or a plan put in motion to fix corruption within law enforcement departments that are wreaking havoc on the streets of America.
To fix the flaws in the system our lawmakers have resorted to the action of punishing lower level criminals by creating stricter and more mandatory laws as opposed to diverting funds that would come close to anything that made sense.
A thinking that has migrated into the way we deal with the devastation caused by an epidemic of drunk driving that has become more about punishing the criminal in an arena of guilty until proven innocent rather than focusing on the heart of the issue.
The issue that is about a man or woman’s decision to get behind the wheel in an inebriated state rather than using one of the many alternatives available to get a ride home.
In an area where alternatives are many a person does not have any excuse for their selfish actions and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Regardless of the amount public transit currently available or taxi cab companies in route; every community across the globe should be taking this problem head on with the spirit of helping their fellow, man woman and child by using public funds to create alternatives and programs to prevent accidents rather than focusing on punishment alone.
Punishment that is coming well after the damage has already been done in the loss of property and life when prevention will save lives from keeping the next accident from happening.
The problem with figuring out the messy landscape of wading through the constant clash of cultures, religion, and gender is one that will never see an end.
It is our differences that make us great but it is also these same differences that have become a source of conflict.
Conflicts that will have the ability to end when each and every person on the planet makes the dramatic choice to get past the need to shut their brains off by focusing on a single word instead of examining the whole story.
The story about how we all belong to the same race of people and have to deal with the same basic issues in our daily lives.
This race is the human race and the issues are all part of the experience called life.
