The Deconstruction of the Tea Party Movement Boston 1773 to 2010
February 21st 2010 12:58
Before there can be any talk about the next wave of revolution to sweep over the political landscape of the United States of America there must be time and place for us to reflect on a history of defiance.
A history of defiance that began with the Boston Tea Party in 1773 when colonists in the land that would later be known as the United States of America took it upon themselves to make a statement about what they felt was an injustice.
An injustice that would later lead to a Revolution and Independence from British Rule in the creation of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights…
Behind every movement that has occurred in the years, decades and centuries to follow Americans are forced to reflect back on these acts that would still be considered criminal in a modern context.
Acts that brought together thieves, landowners, commoners, abolitionists and slave owners together with the common interest of creating something better.
It is with this thought that we must jump to the present.
The present that unveils a nation in peril with trillions of dollars in national debt, a government that continues to rule with a squabble first act later mentality and an angry nation.
An angry nation that has taken it upon themselves to get involved in the face of what they see as a train that has fallen off the tracks.
It was this anger that sparked the rise of a Junior Senator from Illinois in Election “08” and stirred the passions of a nation.
Passion that elevated buzz words like Hope and Change to pop culture status and also set benchmarks for the things that would come shortly after the oath of office was taken and the circus surrounding the election left town.
The circus that blinded us from the questions that have yet to be answered…
Questions surrounding the heart of the Boston Tea Party, the emotions of the colonists that took direct action and the people who took this event to heart in joining the revolution.
The revolution that was less about tea and was more about placing a check on government power.
A check on the practices of a government that was not acting in the interests of the people.
When the Tea Party movement first arose it was easy for the “Powers that Be” to deem the intentions of the people invoking their First Amendment Rights as Racist or Obstructionist against the policies of a new President but as time went on reality continued to take hold.
Reality surrounding the anger that would not go away from a change in the Oval Office and the problems that come with any government that has Absolute Power.
The absolute power of creating and passing legislation along party lines and ignoring the ground swell of displeasure from the American people.
Displeasure that began when the first Bailout was Proposed and continued through the final Trillion Dollar Stimulus Package.
Much like the attempts of the British Monarchy to box the voice of dissent as something from rebels or petty crooks; the controlling parties on Capitol Hill didn’t feel the need to take control of the situation before it spiraled to the point we’re at now.
The point where a simple movement to get the attention of a government run amuck has become a full fledged political call to action.
A call to action for conservative control of government on the merry go round known as American political process.
A merry go round where a statement as simple as reigning in government spending can turn into a rallying cry of eliminating all liberals from government and pushing social issues to the forefront at the bat of an eye.
In what should have been a lesson learned from the past decade; the American people are poised to jump right back on the same carousel that has lead to the disasters of joblessness, an economic collapse and an escalating national deficit.
The problem in this country has nothing to do with Tea Parties, Movements for Change, Contracts with America or the Person sitting in the Oval Office.
The problems in America come from losing the original meaning behind the message and not following the clues to the destination.
The destination that will take us to a place where hope and change exist while still keeping our minds open to the voice of dissent when it’s right in front of our faces.
The same voice of dissent that warned us against a rush to war, asked for higher standards from the most powerful man in the free world and requested that government listen to the displeasure of the people to reign in out of control spending.
It is these voices of dissent that have been lost in the conversation.
The conversation that should be about making America a better nation but always gets twisted into a play on race, religion, sex or a war between political interests.
If there’s any political war happening in the United States of America it’s a war between ourselves.
A war that will not be decided by a Democratic or Republican Majority but will rest in the hands of the Independent Middle.
The Independent Middle who holds the key for rational thinking in a nation of Extremes and the last saving grace for a nation who has lost its way on the back and forth carousel of misunderstanding.
