From Left Field: The True Definition of Understanding
May 11th 2011 10:54
Somewhere between the moment that human beings first came face to face with the realization that each and every person is different from one another and the moment that the current climate of anger, division and lack of understanding took over modern conversation someone forgot to remind us that we lost our way.
A way that was once rooted in the premise that differences can be surmounted if groups of people are willing to work together for a common goal.
A theory that sounds simple in principal but has been twisted with political and social diversions to keep a world public divided against itself.
Divisions that have profited the few and have also brought many riches and seats of power to the forces that have continued sharpening knives in robust war chests to maintain a climate of division in modern conversation.
The easy thing for the general public to do in this situation is look at both sides of the fence and pick out a cheerleading outfit for the team that puts the prettiest bow on their white horse.
The problems happening in the United States of America and around the globe are deep and far reaching.
A systemic financial crisis bigger than the past sessions of a do nothing Congress and the blunders of the Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush and Obama Administrations combined has left a nation that once prided itself on being too big to fail in a quandary.
A quandary about how we can dig ourselves out of a hole by using the same broken shovels that caused the problem in the first place.
It’s a sad situation when Americans from sea to shining sea are forced to go against their natural instincts to figure things out for themselves with a glimmer of hope from a Tea Party or Campaign for Change that always ends up being wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Wolves that devour intelligent conversation about sensible solutions as opposed to the bullish double speak about choosing a side and us vs. them as being the only solutions to fix a broken process.
When it comes to defining the word “understanding” it will take more than the simplicity of words coming out of our mouths.
To gain a true understanding of someone who has a different political belief, practices a different religion, speaks another language, is of a different race, sexual orientation or gender we must give something up of ourselves from deep within.
That something is the most basic principle in taking a brief moment to walk a mile in their shoes.
To imagine what it would be like if someone had an expectation of you to talk or walk a certain a way, to be involved in fanatic fundamentalism or to be a danger to the fabric of society because of who you choose to love.
From a lack of exposure to things happening in our environment some have chosen to live lives behind brick walls while others have made the conscientious decision to broaden their horizons to all the things life has to offer….
If the world is to ever heal from the damage that has already been done from living our lives behind brick walls of assumption we must all make the decision to begin living broadened lives of understanding.
If we do not choose to live together; these decisions will continue to reflect in the actions of our government representatives.
Decisions that are about promoting one political party, religion and individualistic idea as opposed to encouraging legislators to make decisions that are best for their respective nation and the world community as a whole.
