The Deconstruction of the Town Hall Meeting and the Lost Art of Conversation

We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aid, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.

Contrary to popular opinion what we are going through in this country is a re-awakening.
A re-awakening of the spirit where the American people are finally taking government back into their own hands and aren’t afraid to voice opinions about the problems in this country.
Problems that have lead us down the road of an economic crisis, rushed wars that have cost the lives men and women who selflessly chose to serve and an unemployment crisis of epic proportions.
Some would venture to say that this anger felt on the streets of America logically translated into everything that propelled President Barack Obama to his heights of success while others may say it was simply a mandate on the Darth Vader like figure created from everything that embodied the presidential regime of George W. Bush.
At this point and time of our nations history the cause of this current rise to action is less important than the things that are happening in the hear and now.
The hear and now that has lead to a call for universal health care for the tired and weary who are currently going without and balancing this cry with the need to get America back on her feet again.
This would normally be the point where I scream and yell at our government officials to get their acts together in an effort to do everything they can to help our fellow man while also waving the yellow flag of caution to not race into decisions along partisan lines.
This is not the time or place to do this because a line has been crossed and I am afraid there is no turning back.
A line drawn with pure hearts to create a special place for the average citizen to allow their voices to be heard in direct dialogue with local and national politicians.
A place that has been invaded by partisans from both parties and special interests in the creation of mini campaign rallies to force the other side into submission.
Of all the things that came to fruition during election “08” the transformation of the Town Hall Meeting is among the greatest travesties to ever occur in national politics.
The last safe haven for the small town citizen to voice the things that are happening on main street America is now a pit of death with both sides seeing the red glare of a bull’s rage.
The red glare created from politicians invading this space and creating mandates on the other side, spreading lies and pointing fingers of blame to the past in creation of scenarios for all of the problems that exist in the current landscape.
Newton’s law of motion clearly states that for every action there is an equal or opposite reaction…
The action played by the majority was to rely on the same old partisan arguments to try and fix the messes created from our own device which has been met with the reaction of backlash and anger which happens to be a bi-partisan emotion.
Blind backlash and anger from being told they were obstructionists for not being fully vetted into spending programs.
Blind backlash and anger created from being told they were Un-American for not jumping on the health care bandwagon.
Blind backlash and anger for the half of the country who were told their opinions did not matter because the beliefs they hold dear to their hearts were on the wrong side of the 50% in the most partisan Presidential election in history.
Blind backlash and anger to everything our modern politicians are telling us to believe are the reasons why we are being spoon fed the belief that things are getting better but the proof on the streets of America are telling us otherwise.
The problem is not the deconstruction of everything the Town Hall Meeting was meant to be nor is it the break down of real dialogue and finding a compromise for every American to get their piece of the American pie.
The problem came when the powers that be decided shoving agendas down the throat of opposition and rallying the American people into an us vs. them frenzy through Town Hall Meetings would be more efficient than sitting in a room and hashing out a bill that would work for all Americans.
This is the same logic that created the current economic crisis, lead us into a witch hunt for weapons of mass destruction and created the road for simple answers that have caused some of the worst atrocities in American history.
The time to talk is now but we’re not poised to do this because the battle field is scorched with broken promises, false agendas, deflated spirits, pointed fingers and a pit of anger.
There isn’t anyone in the conversation who could blame the average citizen for coming out to a Town Hall meeting to explode their anger and frustration on state and national representatives.
If we are to ever get results our anger must be measured and focused with the clear understanding that it isn’t the liberals or conservatives alone who are to blame for the deconstruction of the process.
The blame game needs to point to the left, right and end squarely on the things we’re doing in our personal lives in understanding the entire situation and how we allow the politicians we follow to get away with doing the things that have destroyed the process.
Until the day comes where we can look ourselves in the mirror with the understanding of our role in the process we don’t have the right to judge anyone who comes into the conversation with explosive anger and closed minds.
This is the reaction to a government that stays in power because we have lost control and this will be our future so long as we allow this process to continue.
