Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Understanding the Anger

September 26th 2010 12:47
For every news report, political parties pledge and backwards comment about why the American people are angry is a missed opportunity to find the root of the problem.

The root of the problem that has nothing to do with the actions of George W. Bush, a Democratically controlled Congress drunk with power, the "need" for America to turn back to God, Broken Glass Ceilings, how we should have voted for Senator McCain or the fact hat President Obama and the Majority powers in Congress are still not getting it.

The root of the problem is the feeling of disappointment inside each and every free thinking American who understands that the problems that exist in our country are from our own design and will not be fixed by a recycled political movement from the left or right.

In a modern age of extremes it is no longer enough to take to the streets for a cause or an issue without giving into the system.

The system that will absorb the purity of our first amendment rights to speak out against a President who lost his way by engaging in wars with no ending while forsaking issues on the home front or a Congress that felt it was necessary to abuse the gift of absolute power by pushing partisan mandates after winning an election that promised real change in Washington.

Change is defined as moving from one thing to another which we are given a 50% chance of happening in any election where there is an incumbent and a challenger.

From this 50% is an analysis of the situation that stands before us in a broken economy, the partisan solutions that have been proposed from the left and right, the engagement in wars of religion, pettiness and obstruction that have not done the American people any good along with a lack of movement on the issues that truly affect the health and welfare of Americans with issues that concern the protection of our food and water supply.

For that other 50% is the question of whether the man or woman who is running a campaign against the incumbent is going to live up to their pledge of bridging the gap between the political parties, will put aside social issues for open and fair debate in front of the full Congress as opposed to cramming unpopular issues down the throats of the American people, whether the man or woman running for office defines themselves along the fluctuating terms of party doctrine that will bend to the will of the lowest common denominator and if this change is a realistic possibility.

While it is impossible to give worth to any Contract with America, Pledge to America or Campaign for Change by judging the words that have been put to paper it is relevant to look at the history of these political movements that promised a difference and gave us more of the same.

The same promises to the forgotten middle who vote issue by issue that turn into a push for health care at all costs, reckless spending on bail outs, using the will of the people as a hammer to say “I’m right and you’re wrong” instead of using the voices of the opposition to add balance to the conversation and a never ending grid lock that has brought public dissatisfaction in the federal government to record high numbers.

There will be no fixing the problems on Capitol Hill and the Oval Office until we figure it out.

Until we figure out the secret code to understanding that we are all Americans and have the same desires for the United States of America to prosper and succeed.

Once we dig past the BS that is piled onto us day after day, month after month, year after year and decade after decade we will see a nation that is suffering while the powers that be cater to corporations and special interests, divide us by piling issues onto the rich and political opponents, ignore the issues that face us on a daily basis and continue age old wars that scar the average citizen on main street.

When it comes down to it we are angry because the people we elect into office aren’t doing their jobs and the super heroes of legend aren’t coming to rescue us.

Instead, we get powerful movements centered on the things the things that need to change but are left unanswered.

Unanswered because the citizens who have the courage to stand up for what they believe are labeled as racists, radicals, liberals, dreamers, communists, out of touch or with one of the other labels that help us tune out what they are saying.

For all the efforts to drown out the real voices of the people it is eventually accomplished when the important issues they fight for are thrown into the partisan doctrines of the big two political parties to stand beside all the other issues that have gotten us nowhere.

The merry go round will continue to spin so long as the American people stand in ignorance watching opportunities to change the direction of a broken nation pass them by.
