The Modern American Revolution and the Rediscovery of the Radical Middle
November 22nd 2009 14:08
In the year 1775, the first shots were fired in a war that would result in the creation of a country built on radical ideals. Radical ideals of all men being equal in the eyes of their creator no matter their religion, socio economic class or standing in society.
These embers of revolution inspired men born of wealth to craft documents that would stand the test of time to expand these revolutionary ideals to women, people of all races and sexual orientation.
The journey of America as a nation is a twisted tale of controversies and things that don’t always add up but the one thing every American can take pride in is the end results.
The end result of an open society where opportunities stand before us for merely being born in a country that stands for equal rights, justice and freedom for all its citizens.
For every story of radicalism there is always a flip side that is just as bold in stature. A flip side where racism, sexism and hate still exists in a modern world...
For this there is no utopian answer to eradicate these ideals but to only find a way for our society to become stronger as a whole.
Stronger by focusing on the importance of bringing people together as opposed to using arguments about this visible minority to posture one side over the other.
Arguments that are based on the premise of “winner take all” rather than crafting ideas that will work for all Americans.
From these ideals of “all or nothing” an incensed anger has been growing in the American populous.
What was once considered a group of outcasts who were shoved aside as an irrelevant minority is now a force to be reckoned with in deciding the leaders of the most powerful nation in the free world.
This group of radicals is tired of the spin, double speak and hidden agendas as they march forward in the next stage of the American Revolution.
What some would consider a revolution of awareness these men and women are composed of members of every race, political affiliation, gender, socio economic class and sexual orientation.
What drives these men and women isn’t the failures of past administrations, historical speeches that lay out everything Americans need to hear, broken glass ceilings, historical milestones or bringing morality back to America.
The things that created this revolution are the very same things that are tearing this country apart.
It’s about the unyielding partisanship and the loss of conversation.
The loss of conversation that begins with the things that need to happen on a national level but aren’t getting done because of forces that stand on the far right and left.
Forces that need friction and strife to remain in their positions of power.
Positions of power that have allowed the special interests to fill in the gaps where the voice of people used to reside.
There was a time in America where a political debate was about something more than the lights, camera, glitz and glamour.
A time where politicians would talk about the issues and the American people were given the opportunity to listen with an understanding of the things that stand in front of them.
In a Reality TV obsessed society we’ve been reduced into the belief that our opinions only matter if we are in the voting block that is the flavor of the day.
Flavors of the day that come in the form of soccer mom’s, hockey dads, white males, Latino’s, Blacks along with other categories and sub categories.
With the conversations of segmentation, a glaze of unimportance concerning our individual vote is cast across the nation. A nation where the anger is rising from failures in government that won’t improve until the American people take the power back.
The power we’ve lost by becoming entranced in conversations of god, guns and abortion while our political leaders pull the strings of our worst fears.
Strings that distract us from the lack of real solutions that aren’t being put in place to prevent a meat industry from pushing the limits of decency in preparing the food we eat.
Strings that distract us from the things that could be happening to promote real change in fixing the crisis in our environment beyond the creation of “green” jobs to payback political contributors.
Strings that distract us from an internationally waged war on drugs we’re wasting billions of dollars on while filling American prisons with citizens on the lower end of the crime spectrum while the crime syndicates are growing by the day.
Strings that distract us from finding real solutions in alternative energy, making the streets of America safer, fixing the economic crisis without breaking the American economy and finding a way for Americans of every race, nationality, creed and sexual orientation to come to the table of understanding.
A table where we can find real solutions to the biggest hot button issues of the day based around the premise of creating a better life for all Americans instead of allowing the majority to make decisions based on the premise of “I Won and You lost.”
The side of majority who will always take it upon themselves to use the gifts given to them by the American people to craft a story of having the right to close their ears to the other side.
The players may change but the story will always remain the same.
The story of an American government that needs to change the way it does business but is unwilling to do so because the American people have no choice but to elect one side or the other
The time for revolution from the middle is now.
A revolution that demands the political powers that be to listen to the true voice of the people.
The voice that wants change but not the kind of change that is transformed into political agendas.
The voice that doesn’t want to see a single child die because of a lack of health care but also has the rational understanding of the consequences behind putting billions of dollars into inefficient programs that would put our nation in further debt to rogue nations.
The voice that believes in the second amendment and all the other amendments in the United States Constitution but also wants to find a better way of keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, enemy combatants and criminals.
The voice that doesn’t want to see America return to the days of backroom abortions but also doesn’t want the doors to open up so wide that there aren’t any reasonable restrictions regarding age and how far along in the pregnancy the abortion would take place.
The voice that wants conversation about the line that separates church and state but doesn’t want religious belief or expression squelched in a trade off to give every man, woman and child their constitutional right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
For every argument from the extreme right or left there is a middle ground to give all parties involved the rights that are inherent in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
It is with this thinking that growing segments of the population are fed up with what they are being told is news from a media that is profiting off of the fans that feed the flames.
The flames of intolerance that are focused on polarizing figures the likes of Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton in an effort to tell us everything that a politician should or should not be.
Political Discussions are no longer about the issues but has become a media circus surrounding the side of popularity a man or woman falls onto.
Poll numbers are the new information source of the day and the American public is done playing the game of hide and seek and being told what to believe.
The proof of the rise in Independent Voter registration is all on paper but media sources are behind the ball in bringing up the topic beyond twisting the story into a well crafted drama about the demise of the Republican Party.
What’s happening in this country is something more than disenfranchisement with a political party known for promoting limited government.
What’s happening on the streets of America is a rejection of both parties in the creation of an informed electorate who is ready to let their voices be known through the casting of their votes.
Votes in promotion of a better way as opposed to support of the radical ideals of the extreme.
