A History of Violence
July 24th 2011 12:59
To truly understand the history of the human race is to understand the role violence has played throughout the history of our existence as a race of people.
Violence that has never been limited to any religion, race, nationality, revolution or social uprising but has been rooted in the most basic instincts of human beings as a race of people.
It was once prognosticated that the sophistication of the modern age with the lack of a need for men, women and children to fight over resources like water, food and energy would lead to a PEACE among the entire world civilization but modern human beings discovered unimaginable ways to limit these good fortunes.
Limitation of resources to the have’s while the have not’s suffer, pollution of the Ocean and Fresh water resources limiting what was once an abundant resource of the lifeblood for all organisms on the planet, waging age old wars against one another in the name of religion, money, gender, national origin, race and political beliefs because it has become much easier to throw stones at one another than it is to learn about the people we share our communities, nation and planet with.
With these facts firmly in place, the events that happened this week in Norway shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the dangerous depths our world has fallen into.
A place where death and destruction caused by mad men and women are no longer a great cause of concern that brings together people of every political belief, religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, creed and nationality but have become rallying cries for the select few to wage wars from within.
Wars to place blame on the warped views of men and women that lacked the ability to differentiate between disagreements that could have been discussed in public forums and the cowardice that comes from stealing life away from innocent men, women and children that were doing nothing more than living out their short lives.
For all the pain and suffering that Usama Bin Laden and the man responsible for the Norway massacre caused in physical damage; the most impactful part of the legacy they left behind is in the permanent mental damage they caused to everyone affected by these tragedies.
The mental damage that is caused when the world community is forced to ask the question of why these things continue to happen in a world that has every opportunity to be peaceful but chooses to react in violence to express religious, national and political points of view.
The answer to this question for some people in the conversation will always be to blame a religion, laws of a nation or political beliefs which undoubtedly causes more discourse, anger and a failure to create real solutions that will prevent the loss of more innocent lives.
For every tragedy caused in the name of a religion, politics, against a race of people or individuals because of their sexual orientation there is a victim or victims forgotten after the headlines disappear, the angry mobs seeking social justice dissipate and the men, women and politicians seeking to make a name for themselves find another story to latch onto.
It is in the moments after the freshness of a media story disappears that society has the choice to move forwards or backwards with decisions to find a long term remedy.
Remedies that include understanding the damage that can be done with weapons of every kind but not placing all of our focus on the instrument of the destruction without first looking deep inside ourselves to understand the path that brought the perpetrator to the scene of the crime.
Remedies that include understanding the destructive consequences that come when religious fundamentalism intermingles with a lack of education, a lifetime of poverty and an existence fueled by the pain of losing everything to ravages of war and not falling into the trap of simplicity that comes with deciding that an act of a group or a single man or woman is in the name of an entire religion or political belief.
When it comes down to it, we must work harder than we have ever worked before as a society to overcome the lazy traps that have been set up to create our own self destruction.
Self destruction that will come only if we choose to try and understand the problems of the modern age through the Warped Vision mad men and women want us to see it through.
The same warped vision that was used by Adolf Hitler to separate his vision of the world from everything the world could be if we just took the time to come together as a race of people instead of spending each and every day creating new reasons to be apart.
United we Stand and Divided we Fall is a phrase used to describe the dangerous consequences of the things to come if we don’t use these tragedies as a clear warning about the path the world is headed.
It is up to us as individuals, to not seek the easy way out when coping with the painful news that comes from understanding how helpless each and every one of us is in a dangerous world.
It is through this helplessness that we should be inspired to spend more time working together in search of solutions that will serve as the united front needed to prevent the next global tragedy.
