The Plague of Wars and Rumors of Wars in the Modern Age of Extremes
February 27th 2011 12:10
It was said that the end of the word would come from a series of wars and rumors of wars that would lead to an apocalypse.
An apocalypse that would be the end of the world as we know it and the beginning for something better…
When we look back at these words written centuries ago; the first thing that comes to mind is a war between nations for supremacy of resources or a cataclysmic battle between what we personally perceive as a war between good and evil.
While there is a battle within ourselves to do good in the world by helping our fellow man and living a life of meaning there is also the presence of an element that pushes us to extremes.
Extremes, given the simple label of evil that we can throw into the conversation about other individuals or groups of individuals while we we ignore the battles that exist within ourselves.
Battles that have been the escalation of wars greater than any physical conflict the world has ever or will ever witness because the scars that remain cannot be repaired with any amount of construction, landscaping or beautification.
For these wars and rumors of wars we have become a society fueled by paranoia between religious faiths, nationalities, political beliefs and fear of the things we do not or are unwilling to understand.
While religious conflicts are as old as the existence of the human race; the technological age has created a new means for false prophets to spread their message of rumor, fear and misunderstanding to an audience that is looking to be told what to think instead of discovering truth for themselves.
In a world where rocks are thrown from glass houses by the people in self appointed positions of media power; the public has been left without a rational voice to sort through the bravado and beating of chests.
A rational voice to separate the warped beliefs of extremists that have chosen to go beyond the practices of their faith from the actual words written in religious texts.
In an ideal world, the public would not need a “figure” to help them sort through the over information that bombards us on a daily basis but the world we live in is ruled by a black and white standard.
A black and white standard that judges our beliefs by the side of the fence we choose to stand on.
A fence that has a very thin middle to straddle and harsh expectation to pick a side when we should be respecting both sides of the conversation before passing judgment.
This unwritten social law is preserved with the weapon of personal attacks against anyone who steps outside of what they believe.
While it is said that a blind eye is turned to these differences; the element of war shows it’s face through our actions of indifference when the opportunity to seek compromise, progress and understanding presents itself.
Opportunities that have been squandered because we prefer to fight among ourselves instead of viewing the bigger picture that comes from using diversity as an opportunity to learn from one another rather than living in separate houses.
Separate houses that have been the cause of the greatest war known to mankind…
A war that has no set enemy or combatant and can present itself in the form of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, social class, age or any other form where the presence of a difference is presented.
One of the things that separate the human race from all other species on the planet is our ability to remember the past and create an action to not repeat the same sequence.
With this knowledge we should look upon our history as a race of people and take action within our personal lives to not repeat the same mistakes of our ancestors.
Mistakes that began with the simple idea of “us” and “them” but soon became “us vs. them” when an agent of disruption took it upon themselves to seize the opportunity to divide a society blinded to the battle that rages inside as opposed to the smoke screen in front of their eyes.
In a world where the conversation is limited to partisan arguments and unacceptable levels of extremism it is important for the world public to take back the power from the people who have chosen to abuse it.
