Politics and Culture - American Profiles In Radical Independence

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Let Anger be your Guide”

June 13th 2010 12:00
A philosopher once said that decisions made in anger never solved anything…

This is the kind of philosophy we instill in our children but is not the same kind of logic we ask of our elected officials in times of crisis.

Times of crisis that present unforeseen challenges in the future direction of a nation divided by banners of political ideology, religion, regional geography, race, gender and sexual orientation.

It is these divisions that are shielding the American Public from the overlooked conversation of asking ourselves why.

Why is the conversation from our media outlets centered around how angry the American Public is when it should be focused on how we can fix a broken system?

Why is a narrative about a group of smart, qualified and ready to lead women winning their respective primaries, from both sides of the aisle, lumped into a side bar of being a "Ladies Night" and considered more important than highlighting their individual qualities as canidates in what they could bring to Congress?

Why is it more important to question a President’s Anger in a time of crisis rather than judging the measure of his long term strategies in cleaning up messes and protecting the American People?

These are the questions we are left with when narratives of voter frustration with the powers that be are twisted into the typical jargon of race, gender, sexual orientation, God, Guns and Abortion Politics.

For the things that are left out of the conversation it is the people who use their fundamental rights to elect our representatives in Congress and the White House who are the losers.

Losers because of the lack of choice that is presented to them and the backlash for having to choose between a pair of weak candidates.

We are told to be angry and to fight for change but there can be no change without an overhaul to the system.

The system that forces candidates in major elections to get in bed with the banks and oil companies that later become famous for destroying our economy and oceans.

When the oil gusher is capped, it is realized that the Gulf Coast and Oceans around the World are ruined beyond repair and the economy rebounds for a short period of time before the next collapse it will not be the measure of the Presidents anger in a time of crisis that will be remembered.

Much like the legacy of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan along with the ability of the United States Armed Forces, Police Departments across the nation, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security and various other organizations under the direction of the Commander and Chief having the ability to prevent any further attack on American soil after 9-11; it will be the results of their actions that will be remembered.

Actions from the BP Oil Disaster, Hurricane Katrina Relief and mistakes made in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars laced in failure from a lackadaisical attitudes, arrogance and finger pointing.

Different scenarios but the same results now that the world will forever have to deal with an even more unbalanced region, the aspect of black rain and American pollution making it’s way to the Oceans of Europe, Asia, Antarctica and Africa.

The time to say that any of our current problems evolved from a Republican mess due to Dick Cheney’s BP ties or a Democratic mess from Obama’s large BP contributions from his 2008 politcal campaign has long since passed.

The time that is here is to ask ourselves the question of looking at the blue and red shoes on both feet and trying to figure out a way to do better.

Better in the sense of either fixing the problems on both sides of the aisle or calling in new chiefs to fix the tribe.

America much like the rest of the world is a nation whose leaders continue to get it wrong.

Unlike a political election where the winners can blind themselves with parades on the belief that their ideals were considered more in tune with the masses at a certain point and time…

We do not need political ideology to fix this mess but a new way of thinking.

It was a united America that was one of many forces to take down tyranny in WWI, WWII and the Cold War. This was done with a coalition that consisted of nations across the globe.

In these times of world crisis we need this same spirit to return to the landscape with the power of the mind as opposed to tanks, airplanes or a nuclear bomb.

Until we figure this out as a society we are destined to continue digging ourselves to our own demise.

There is much to be said about anger as a motivator. It was the uniting factor during World War 2 that turned our Great Depression into a ferocious machine, defeating the enemies of freedom. It held us together during the first couple of years after 9-11 and made us stronger as a people.

That being said, calm deliberation and defined intentions are the only way to insure success in war, peace or any other endeavor.

Unfortunately, right now we have neither anger nor deliberation going for us, and nothing but foolishness surrounding every issue. When we need leadership, we get grandstanding and whining. When we need unity, we get division. It doesn't speak well of those in power, or those who elected them.

One current example of our problem is the mess in the Gulf. Instead of accepting help immediately, B.O. (B.S.) refused. Now the oil is on the coastline and all he wants to do is pretend to be tough and wonder whose butt to kick. Leadership requires strength and decisiveness, not dithering and waiting.

Mike Huckabee had several people on his program last weekend with ideas to clean up the oil. Instead of playing the blame game, we should be implementing those ideas and seeing which ones will work best. Instead of the governors like Bobby Jindahl having to beg the federal government to do their job and release the funds and permissions necessary, the feds should back off and allow the states to use all the resources they need.

American ingenuity can accomplish what panels, taxes and dithering never will.

Well put S.L., the shenanigans surrounding this "World" issue concerning our oceans only illustrates the bigger problems in modern society.

Whether it's the states being given the ball to fix the mess from the ground floor up or President Barack Obama finally stepping forward and being the leader the American people elected him to be...

Something needs to be done and quickly.

As far as I know, BP was not elected by the American people to protect the populous and the lands the world calls home...

If a solution comes from outside of the Federal Government from an entity such as a state or another nation it should be jumped on because this is not an issue that is uniquely American.

It's sad to say this but I think the reports of exactly how much oil has been dumped into the ocean (that will be given from underwater sensors that are long overdue) will open up the eyes and minds of the so called "experts" who have been trying to put blinders on the eyes of the people or will cause such a reaction from the people that rational solutions will have to be explored.

When swift action is needed, Khalfani, we have a banana slug leading us in the race. The oil spill is, indeed, a problem for everyone in the world as it could happen anywhere.

It seems strange to see the absence of the usual protesters, these days. Imagine if this had happened two years ago!

Amen to that S.L., two years ago this would have been a circus about George W. Bush dropping the ball on the state of Louisiana yet again...

It's amazing how different the shoe looks on the other foot isn't it?

That's a fact! It's like all the "women's rights" and "gay rights" activists forgetting to complain about the treatment of women and gays under Shariah law. Talk about selective, huh?

That's the story with modern politics...

Selectivity to meet the means of a party, social agenda or power strategy.

Common Sense and Sensible Discussion to meet a goal that works for all the people has no place in the end game anymore.

Politics today remind me of an old fashioned tug-of-war, Khalfani. The only difference is that both sides end up in the mud puddle! Some by their own devices, others dragged in by sheer force.
